after everything was done and dusted, all that was left were the memories of the woman I had been- I used to hate her, absolutely loathe her viewing her as weak and worthless for allowing the painful words of others to rob her of her confidence and power but now I see how brave she was trying to fight her demons in her mind Day in and day out, no matter what always getting up to function she gathered her strength from somewhere to become the version of me I am today
Old insecurities come to visit me again, they shake up my newly acquired confidence they tell me Iβm not smart enough and Iβll never be truly loved They tell the only thing I have going for me is how sexy I can be Otherwise Iβm a waste of a person because of my bpd And I try to shut it all down and not once again drown Because I have made so much progress and have come so far Only to once again fight an anxiety and depression war but itβs daunting not to let the negativity get to me So here I go once again trying to calm down my brain from intense and intrusive thoughts by covering myself with self love
“I can’t recall the last time I was kissed”-Lizzy McAlpine
I didnβt mean to, it wasnβt in my plans for self improvement But I fell for you in spring I donβt even know when it started to happen All I remember is absolutely hating it hated how soft and corny it made me hated how I started smiling at your messages hated how you started to melt my jadedness about love and how I finally felt like love was a possibility for me
by the fireside I fall in love again and this time Iβm sure because before I met him I knew I was enough before I met him I knew I was complete before he was even a thought in my mind he knew all about me before I knew anything about him heβs read my poetry and nothing Iβve written scares him to him Iβm more than a pretty girl to him Iβm more than my diagnosis to him Iβm more than my chaotic past because unlike the others, he sees my humanity he sees my perseverance and resilience and to him, Iβve become his everything
no you’re not even here but you’re doing my head in-Gracie Abrams
1)donβt try to change me 2)donβt try to save me 3)donβt put me up on an altar 4)donβt try to dim my light 5)donβt tell me you love me unless you mean it 6)donβt get mad when I make you into my muse
I look calm but inside of me lies the heart of a leona
my protective instinct rings loudly in me I will protect everyone I love no matter what even if I have to die for them to be safe even if I have to leave them alone for them to have peace of mind their well being means everything to me inside of me lies the heart of a lioness ready to roar ready to protect everyone she loves
hope appears in the leaves dancing on an almost spring day and I sit in stillness and silence wondering what it means Admiring the splendor of nature before me understanding how beauty is found in the ordinary
I’m proudest of the woman I became on Sept 8, 2023-my liberation day
I reflect a lot on who I was, who I am, and who I will be- and Iβve reach the conclusion that Iβm proud of all three versions of me Constantly fighting my demons no matter how viciously they came after me Constantly reinventing and rebuilding myself even when the chaotic earthquakes of life broke me apart I reflect on the goddess, the beast in me who always refuses to give up who continues to get and keep going no matter how hard life tries to break me down
so I actually wrote this poem in December of 2022 after I got sick with COVID. This poem was actually inspired by the 2005 poem, “Here we again”- I was editing it to post it on instagram and something about it screamed turn into a poem about your ailment and this is what I ended with. God, my mind was extra crazy with COVID brain. lol.
Another unexpected surprise confirmed with the second pink line Is this Karma coming for me? for wishing this on my enemies this puts a pause on my life for a few days and I lay in bed in a fever haze soon I lose my sense of smell and taste Iβm humbled and make a promise to the universe Iβll be more careful with my words and stop giving into my rancor
we were another lesson in love lost and mourned I tried everything to make it work even where it was past our expiration date I never wanted our children to be products of a broken home but even my best efforts could not fight how different we were or our long term story of incompatibility it wasnβt your fault or mine we were just both too stubborn to see what was in front of us a friendship that shouldβve stayed platonic but you fell in deep for me and I was tired wanted to settle and we made it work until one day I realized it wasnβt enough
I still wonder who Peruvian Me would have been-probably not wearing this beanie…lol
if my parents hadnβt chosen america as their new homeland I wonder who I would’ve been a woman of priviledge married to a man who loves me for me or would it have been inevitable for me to turn out as a rebel whoβd cause many scandals would I have take my education more seriously because of the pressure from society and my parents or would I have still struggled with my ADD and said fuck it I wonder who Peruvian me would have been if I didnβt have a bilingual and bicultural identity
My higher education experience was different from a lot of people because I went as an non traditional student in my 20s with children. The first college I went to was Gainesville Community College where I received my A.A in English with a high GPA. After that I got my B.A at the University of Georgia. I did horrible in high school barely graduation so when I told people I was going to college, I was laughed at and ridiculed. Still, I was determined and surprised myself. At Gainesville Community college I had to take remedial classes in order to take regular classes. Surprisingly, I loved college and thrived in that environment. My favorite class was creative writing.
graduating with my A.A in English and two kids….2/10 wouldn’t recommend…lol
After Gainesville Community College, I transfer to the University of Georgia to get my B.A in English. That first semester was overwhelming and I felt incredibly out of place being one of the 1.6 percent of the Latino Student population at the time. Also, I was a mom and older so a lot of the time I was anxious and thought “wtf am I doing here, I don’t belong here”. I’d say that it was kind of a traumatic experience to be honest but I was determined to finish my degree and I did just that. There’s a lot more to that story but it’s for another blog posts. I’ve also written poetry reflecting on that experience and here’s one of them: https://lifeonthebpd.com/2022/10/09/poetry-small/βThere’s another poem I wrote a few years ago when I was in this rage mode about it called, “F*ck You, UGA”. I’m not sure if that poem will ever make it on this blog or anywhere but it is funny. My favorite classes at UGA where my Spanish classes where I thrived and I loved my professors. I wanted to get a minor in Spanish but my Pell grant ran out so I couldn’t .
me with my two boys at my English Department Graduation in 2009
One thing I will say is that I’m glad I did get my degree despite the many obstacles that stood in my way. From my oldest son being diagnosed with Autism my first year to getting pregnant with my middle son my second year to breaking out in an all body rash during last semester of college where they couldn’t determine the cause of it until almost the end of the semester. I was super determined in getting my degree no matter what craziness in my life was happening at the time and I did it. I hope I set an example to my kids that they too can do it.

As I let go of my limiting beliefs, I grieve the woman I used to be so insecure and unsure of herself so hesitant to take control and power Overthinking and catastrophizing constantly it held me back from living the life of my dreams- Jealousy and envy filled me up Scrolling the professional and personal successes of others on social media Thinking, βthat could have been meβ and giving too much important to the opinions of others wondering constantly- βare they judging me?β It was an toxic story I told myself since the age of 16 and it continued on and on until one day in my middle age I exploded and decided to fight my inner critic and challenge everything I thought was wrong with me slowly I learned to turn my story around Slowly I went from victim to heroine
When I tell you Iβm a poet- please take me seriously donβt think Iβm some cute girl who writes a few verses in her room about how your kiss is a new kind of heaven Poetry for me has a much deeper meaning, poetry is how I bleed out all of my emotions I hold within
When I tell you Iβm a poet- please donβt laugh at me or mock me donβt berate the simplicity of my words I weave into verse Itβs how I make sense of my explosion of thoughts Itβs how I express what I canβt say out loud
When I tell you Iβm a poet- donβt try to cure me of my poetic nature and prey on my insecurities and try to kill my dreams of making my art seen I know how the odds are stacked against someone like me I donβt do it to make it to the mainstream- I do it so other women like me can be seen, can be inspired to dream
And finally when I tell you Iβm a poet- Appreciate the artist in me, make yourself a sanctuary to put my poetry in- Iβm not asking for endless compliments or an ego boost Iβm asking for a safe space in you to love the poet I hold within
